James Gunn talks Guardians 3 title and completing the trilogy

Marvel Studios‘ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming home to Digital HD on August 8, followed by the DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on August 22. In anticipation of the release, writer/director James Gunn spoke to Collider about the Guardians 3 title and completing the trilogy begun in 2014.

Gunn noted that production on Guardians 3 would begin in “a little more than year,” and that they do have a release date locked in. He also confirmed that the third film will “probably” be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as expected, and may feature the original team of Ravagers led by Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar (a.k.a. Starhawk).

“It’s been pretty easy,” Gunn said of the scripting process. “The truth is, the first movie is the first act, the second movie is the second act, and the third movie is the third act so I’m tying a lot of stuff together in the third film. We get a lot of answers on a lot of different things, so doing that in an elegant way takes a little bit of grace and elegance. It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie. I do an incredibly in-depth treatment for every movie. I think of writing a screenplay as creating the body of a human being and you’ve got to start with the skeleton, start with the bones, and you create the bones. You take a lot of time because that’s the actual base of the movie and if you screw that part up, later on down the line, you’re going to have a lot of mistakes. So by creating a really strong foundation for the story, that’s the most important thing. So I write a good treatment that’s probably about 70 pages long. It includes photographs and things like that. So that has been the way I’ve dealt with every movie and this one as well.”

Andrew Kevin Walker to Script Lone Wolf and Cub Movie

Se7en’s Andrew Kevin Walker to script Lone Wolf and Cub movie

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount Pictures has landed long-in-development and long-running Japanese manga Lone Wolf and Cub, with the studio having now enlisted Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker to pen the script.

Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Star Trek Beyond) has been attached to the project since 2012 and is set to produce the film while also eyeing to direct the adaptation.

Described as an epic samurai adventure, Lone Wolf and Cub was first published in 1970 from writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima. The series ran for six years with 28 volumes of content and over 7,000 pages. The series follows Itto Ogami, the Shogun’s executioneer, who finds himself on an unending quest for revenge after his family is murdered, leaving only his infant son alive. The series follows their adventures as a father and son team and as the young Daigoro grows up they became a pair of assassins.

Lone Wolf and Cub was previously adapted into six feature films starring Tomisaburo Wakayama as Itto Ogami in the early to mid 1970s. Various other TV adaptations of the series have been created over the years as well, including a series running from 1973 to 1976 and one from 2002 to 2004.

EA Closes Visceral Games, Star Wars Game to be Reworked

EA closing Visceral Games, Star Wars game to be reworked

EA has announced today they will be closing down their Visceral Games studio, the creators of the Dead Space series, Battlefield Hardline, and several licensed titles ranging from James Bond to The Godfather. The studio was currently in development on an untitled Star Wars video game with Amy Hennig (Uncharted series) directing the title. As a result of the studio shuttering, however, the game will be retooled by a different development team moving forward.

“In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game,” Patrick Söderlund, Executive Vice President of Electronic Arts wrote in a blog post. “Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design. We will maintain the stunning visuals, authenticity in the Star Wars universe, and focus on bringing a Star Wars story to life. Importantly, we are shifting the game to be a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency, leaning into the capabilities of our Frostbite engine and reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore.”

The game was previously announced back in 2014 and was set for a to-be-announced 2019 release date, but the changes in development will result in a new time frame for the title, which will be announced later. Moving forward, a development team made up of members from across EA Worldwide Studios will continue working on the game and will be led by a team from EA Vancouver that has already been working on the project.

Justice League Star Announces ‘Flash Week’

Justice League Star Announces ‘Flash Week’

With Justice League approaching its release, ‘The Flash’ week is now underway. While fans have already had a whole movie each featuring Wonder Woman and Superman and saw the two join forces with Batman last year, the other members of the Justice League aren’t quite as familiar. Out of all of them, however, The Flash is the best known. Even before his hit TV show on The CW, The Flash has long been one of DC’s most popular character.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both featured cameos from Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Barry Allen has gotten plenty of screen time in the Justice League trailers so far; and for those who have seen the movie, he’s apparently one of Justice League‘s best parts. Still, Warner Bros and DC want to make sure audiences know what separates this take on the hero from the one who’s been on The CW for years. As such, this week’s Justice League ad campaign is all about the Scarlet Speedster.

Justice League is kicking off ‘Flash Week’ today, with a new video featuring Miller. All week, new content will arrive focusing on Barry Allen, including new footage from the film. You can watch said announcement clip with Miller, below:

Last week, Justice League put the spotlight on Aquaman, revealing new footage of him in the film along with commentary from Jason Momoa. ‘Flash Week’ is starting even earlier this week, so we should get even more from the hero and his actor. While Aquaman will get his own solo film next year, WB and DC have yet to announce an official release date for The Flash’s solo movie, Flashpoint. Hopefully, Justice League will help sell fans on Miller’s character and increase anticipation for the solo adventure.

As we await more insight on The Flash, the marketing for Justice League has continued to offer promos, new footage, and interviews with the cast. So far, we learned about the weaknesses of each Justice League member. Though they seem god-like, they do have individual shortcomings. We also learned how Cyborg’s origin will differ from the comics. Like Aquaman and The Flash, he will get more time in the spotlight soon (and considering he’s nowhere near as well-known, he’ll certainly need it). In the meantime, stay tuned as more information on The Flash in Justice League is revealed.
