Terry Gilliam’s Man Who Killed Don Quixote Trailer Arrives After 20 Years

After years and years of waiting, the trailer for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is here to prove that the movie may finally be seen by the world. Director Terry Gilliam has been trying to get this movie made for almost two decades, only to fail time and again. Roadblocks, production stops, rotating cast members. Every problem imaginable has plagued this project. However, we now finally have the first trailer for the movie, which not only gives us our first look at what’s in store, but assures us that The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has actually been shot and is very real.

The trailer is an international trailer and is very much a teaser. It sets up the general beats of the movie and gives us a look at the cast and various settings. But beyond that, it doesn’t give us the best sense of what The Man Who Killed Don Quixote really is. Especially if you’re coming at this knowing nothing about the source material or the long, troubled road to getting this movie made. The most important thing this trailer does is signify that the movie has moved into the marketing phase, at least to some degree. With this movie, you can never be sure, but now more than ever, it looks like we’re finally going to get to see it.

In The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, an advertising executive jumps back and forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. The movie wrapped production nearly a year ago and things have been a little quiet ever since. Here’s what director Terry Gilliam had to say about the character of Don Quixote, via the official website for the movie.

“Don Quixote is a dreamer, an idealist and a romantic, determined not to accept the limitations of reality, marching on regardless of setbacks, as we have done. We’ve been at it so long that the idea of actually finishing shooting this ‘clandestine’ film, is pretty surreal. Any sensible person would have given up years ago but sometimes pig-headed dreamers win in the end, so thank you to all of the ill paid fantasists and believers who have joined to make this longstanding dream a reality!”

Terry Gilliam has been trying to adapt Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra’s Don Quixote novel since the 90s. At various points, actors like Johnny Depp had been attached. The movie’s troubles were chronicled in the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha, which is the closest The Man Who Killed Don Quixote ever came to the big screen.

The cast for the movie includes Jonathan Pryce, Adam Driver, Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård and Jordi Mollà. There were plans for a world premiere at Cannes this year, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be happening. So still, we wait. Amazon Studios will be distributing the movie, which doesn’t have a release date yet. Be sure to check out the first trailer for Amazon production The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
