These are called fore edge paintings. Some books will have more than one, with a different image when splayed the opposite way, or one that shows when the book is closed

Books are such important items, keeping them safe and the concept of libraries alive is something we should think harder about. Kindle is great but books are beautiful items that in there design make you feel like a treasure is within.

I think either this book or books similarly like it (with the golden hidden painting) are at the special/rare books section of Powell’s Books in Portland, OR. Only accessible by events I believe.

I think I figured what the text was is on the back cover. Doesn’t seem to have a connection to the hidden painting.

    > The picture inserted is a copy of one in an album given me in 1947, by Mrs. Edmonia Hill in Baltimore. The view is almost the same as in Miss Currie’s painting.

    > Mrs. Hill’s late husband was S. A. Hill of Allahabad, India, the Professor of Kipling’s “From Sea to Sea”. He had taken this picture in 1886 and it is included in my album of contemporary pictures taken by Professor Hill. Nearly all the album’s 57 pictures have inscriptions in Kipling’s hand writing, probably written while he lived with the Hills in Allahabad in 1888. The inscription under this picture in the album reads

    > The Burning – Ghat Benares

    > “For all the tears of all the eyes

    > Have room in Gunga’s bed,

    > And all the sorrow is gone to-morrow

    > When the red flames have fed”

    > E. Arnold

Had to find an [alternate source]( for the poem at the end since a clear shot wasn’t in the video.

A 1925 copy of Rudyard Kipling’s “Kim” from Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, with a hidden painting on its edges – a technique known as fore-edge painting. The book is one of a series by an artist known as Miss C.B. Currie.

Trump will declare North Korea a state sponsor of terror

Trump will declare North Korea a state sponsor of terror

President Trump said Monday that he will designate North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, a move designed to further isolate the nation for its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Trump said the move will impose further penalties on Pyongyang and result in the “highest level” of sanctions ever placed on the country. He added that the designation will be formalized Tuesday.

Trump said the decision “should have happened years ago” and will ramp up pressure on the “murderous regime” to “end its unlawful nuclear and ballistic missile development.”

The decision returns North Korea to a list it was removed from in 2008 to ease nuclear talks with the George W. Bush administration.

Trump’s announcement comes days after his return from a five-nation tour of Asia, which focused on curbing Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions.

White House officials telegraphed the move before Trump’s departure.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters earlier this month that the killing of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s half-brother at a Malaysian airport played into the decision. The half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, was killed with a banned nerve agent.

North Korea will join Iran, Sudan and Syria on the State Department’s list of terror sponsors.

The designation allows the U.S. to cut off foreign assistance, weapons sales, commercial exports and financial transactions with Pyongyang.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson conceded the “practical effects may be limited” because Pyongyang is already heavily sanctioned by the U.S. government.

But he called the move “very symbolic” of the U.S. desire to increase pressure on Kim Jong Un in an effort to persuade him to drop his nuclear program.

“We still hope for diplomacy,” Tillerson told reporters during a surprise appearance at the White House. “This is only going to get worse until you’re ready to come and talk.”

Trump had been under pressure from members of Congress to slap the designation on North Korea.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) applauded the administration for relisting North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

“Over the past year alone, Kim Jong Un and his regime brazenly assassinated his brother with a chemical weapon and brutally tortured Otto Warmbier, leading directly to his tragic death,” he said in a statement, referring to the American student who died after his release from custody in North Korea.

“These aren’t isolated incidents, but are examples of a consistent pattern of terror,” Royce said, adding that Pyongyang’s push to develop nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles threatens global security.

‘I Should Have Left Them In Jail’ (Trump’s Juicy TWEET)

‘I Should Have Left Them In Jail’ (TWEET)

President Donald Trump has regularly shown that he will lash out against people he feels do not show him the proper respect. Go ahead and add three players of the UCLA Men’s Basketball program to that list, all thanks to LaVar Ball, who is the father of one of those players, as well as our President’s tiny ego.

The three basketball players were arrested in China for shoplifting sunglasses. One of the players, LiAngelo Ball, is part of a high profile basketball family. His father, LaVar, had some controversial words concerning the President’s role in bringing his son home.

Appearing on ESPN Friday, LaVar was asked about the President’s role in keeping his son out of jail. LaVar responded in his typical braggadocio:

What was he over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.”

In reality, the three athletes never actually went to jail. Trump spoke with the Chinese President Xi Jinping after hearing of their predicament, and they were allowed to return to the United States. They have since been suspended by the UCLA athletic program.

However, LaVar’s comments to ESPN appeared to strike a raw nerve with President Trump. He posted the following to Twitter, again making use of his newfound 280 character limit:

His tweet reads:

Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!”

Just… unpack that.

The President of the United States is picking a fight with three college students, all because the father of one of those students brushed off the President’s role in keeping his son out of a Chinese jail for shoplifting sunglasses.

Meanwhile, the former President of the United States was apparently born in Kenya and is a secret Muslim spy. His handpicked predecessor is the leader of a tightly knit criminal conspiracy (and a WOMAN!). She also apparently raped children in the basement of a pizza parlor.

Russian Intelligence Recruited Donald Trump As Early As 1987

Russian Intelligence Recruited Donald Trump As Early As 1987

In 1987, Donald Trump was invited to Moscow by Yuri Dubinin, who would later become the Soviet ambassador to the United States. The purpose of the invitation was ostensibly to discuss a possible real estate project in the capital of the Soviet Union. But the real reason, it turns out, was much more sinister: Dubinin and the Soviets were hopeful of recruiting Trump as a possible asset for intelligence inside the American business world.

According to a new report from Politico, back in the Eighties the Soviets were looking for new sources of information on the United States:

“The Center, as KGB headquarters was known, was especially concerned about its lack of success in recruiting US citizens, according to Andrew and Gordievsky. The PR Line—that is, the Political Intelligence Department stationed in KGB residencies abroad—was given explicit instructions to find ‘U.S. targets to cultivate or, at the very least, official contacts. The main effort must be concentrated on acquiring valuable agents.’”

Trump showed up on the KGB’s radar screen the minute he began dating and later married Czech model Ivana Zelnickova, who is the mother of Trump’s children Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka.

Making contact with Donald Trump and other businessmen in the United States was also a major component of the KGB’s training materials. In what can best be called a spy manual, KGB agents were urged:

“Further improvement in operational work with agents calls for fuller and wider utilisation of confidential and special unofficial contacts. These should be acquired chiefly among prominent figures in politics and society, and important representatives of business and science. These should not only supply valuable information but also actively influence a country’s foreign policy ‘in a direction of advantage to the USSR.”

Trump In Moscow

When Trump arrived in Moscow in January of 1987, the KGB went to work cultivating him by showering him with luxuries and lavish hospitality:

“‘Everything is free. There are good parties with nice girls. It could be a sauna and girls and who knows what else,’ said former KGB — and its successor the GRU — agent Viktor Suvorov. All premises Trump visited on the trip would have been under 24-hour control and surveillance.

“‘The interest is only one. To collect some information and keep that information about him for the future.”

Wild Night In Old Russia

The pattern for trapping Americans into cooperating with the KGB was as one would expect, according to Suvorov:

“It’s at this point you say: ‘Knock, knock! Do you remember the marvelous time in Moscow? It was a wonderful evening. You were so drunk. You don’t remember? We just show you something for your good memory.’”

The “something” would usually be compromising photos and/or videos of the subject engaged in sexual activity. This may account for suggestions in the infamous Steele dossier that Russian intelligence has videos of Trump engaged in “golden showers” with Russian prostitutes.

Trump Seeks Higher Ground

Though nothing concrete developed during Trump’s first trip to Moscow, he did make it clear that he had plans to seek political office one day, according to Politico:

“Nothing came of the trip — at least nothing in terms of business opportunities inside Russia. This pattern of failure would be repeated in Trump’s subsequent trips to Moscow. But Trump flew back to New York with a new sense of strategic direction. For the first time he gave serious indications that he was considering a career in politics. Not as mayor or governor or senator.

“Trump was thinking about running for president.”

If the Russians knew this and also had some kind of damaging information on Trump, they might have been able to urge him to seek the White House as a way of having the ultimate insider in the U.S. government.
