Word of mouth is not helping “Solo: A Star Wars Story” with Heat Vision today reporting that this will become the first of the “Star Wars” films for Disney and Lucasfilm to lose money.
Wall Street analyst Barton Crockett tells the trade “Solo” stands to lose $50-80 million, if not more, for the studio – though details of Disney’s deals for home entertainment and television along with other ancillary revenue streams is unclear.
The film plummeted in its second weekend to finish Sunday with a domestic total of $148.9 million and an overseas total of $115.4 million – a worldwide total of $264.3 million so far. Estimates are the film is looking to close out with only a little more than $400 million globally against a budget of at least $250 million along with a major multi-million-dollar marketing spend.
Compare that to the first ‘A Star Wars Story’ spin-off which ultimately grossed $1 billion worldwide. Fellow analyst Doug Creutz surprisingly doesn’t cite franchise fatigue as the main cause, but rather puts the blame on a lackluster marketing campaign.
Despite the misfire, Disney is hardly hurting. “Black Panther” has grossed $1.345 billion worldwide, and “Avengers: Infinity War” is poised to become the first summer film in history to cross $2 billion. Their upcoming “The Incredibles 2” is also tipped to be one of the biggest films of the summer.
What Men Want Trailer Puts a Gender-Spin on Mel Gibson’s Classic
First Ghostbusters. Then Ocean’s 8. Now, we get What Men Want, a remake of the Mel Gibson comedy classic What Women Want, which puts a gender-swapped spin on the idea. Taraji P. Henson takes over the lead role, and if we’re to believe the first trailer, it will be hilarious.
Paramount Pictures obviously knows what men want. They want a romantic comedy headed-up by Taraji P. Henson. Girls Trip producers Will Packer and James Lopez are behind this upcoming winter release, and they had a big hit on their hands with that previous comedy. So they obviously know what men want too. Do we have to say it any louder? They want more Taraji P. Henson!
Adam Shankman directs What Men Want. He’s perhaps best known for reviving John Waters’ cult classic Hairspray as a big screen musical. The original What Women Want was one of Mel Gibson’s last great films. It followed a chauvinistic advertising executive who acquires the ability to hear what women are thinking. He attempts to use this power to bring about the fall of his female boss, but as he uses this inside knowledge to outwit his superior, the bachelor begins to fall in love with her, and so finds himself feeling more than a little guilty when his plan to have her sacked looks like it may come to fruition.
Now, Taraji P. Henson stars as Ali Davis in a remake that turns everything upside down and on its head. Ali is a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues. When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world…Until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts! With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.
Taraji P. Henson is the real attraction here. But she’s backed up by some capable players who will make this quite the attractive package. Joining her are Tracy Morgan, Aldis Hodge, Richard Roundtree, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Brener, Tamala Jones, Phoebe Robinson, Max Greenfield, Jason Jones, Brian Bosworth, Chris Witaske and Erykah Badu. We have to imagine that What Men Want will cause a bit of an uproar amongst the social media crowd, who like to complain about every thing nowadays.
How dare this movie suggest that Taraji P. Henson wouldn’t be able to survive in the world of men’s sports without the assist of their thoughts. She’s stealing male answers to questions that women can’t answer? That’s blasphemous. Taraji P. Henson doesn’t need man thoughts to make it in this world, and how dare this comedy suggest otherwise! It happened to Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty. What Men Want, though just an innocent romantic comedy, looks and feels like something someone, somewhere, can raise a ruckus about.
What Men Want is in theaters starting January 11. The first trailer comes from Paramount Pictures. If you love watching Taraji P. Henson in a power suit, then you better hurry up and click on the video below. This is going to be your favorite movie of 2019.
New Widows Trailer Has Viola Davis Uniting a Badass Team of Criminals
A new trailer for Widows has dropped. Director Steve McQueen took his time putting together his next movie project following his Best Picture Oscar win for the poignant and brilliantly crafted 12 Years a Slave. McQueen decided to take a very different approach for his follow up, opting to do a gritty crime thriller with a female fronted cast, which probably isn’t what anyone would have guessed he would be doing as his next movie. That said, it looks like we’re all the better for it, as this latest trailer for Widows promises that this is something you need to have on your radar heading into awards season this year.
There is quite a bit of repeat footage from the first teaser used here. However, the new stuff that is introduced gives us a slightly better idea of what’s at stake and how the central plot is probably going to unfold. This trailer also showcases the ridiculous cast that has been assembled which, with no other information, would be enough to get movie fans interested. This thing is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to on-screen talent and it looks like Viola Davis is going to absolutely own in a way that she’s never owned before.
The latest Steve McQueen movie sees a group of Widows, as the title implies, who are forced into a very bad situation after their now-deceased husbands stole some money from the wrong guys. With no other options, they’re forced to try and pull off their own heist in order to set things straight and get their lives back. Unfortunately, by the look of things, that isn’t going to go according to plan. In addition to Viola Davis, the cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson.
It’s rare that a gritty heist movie such as this can go on to garner any real love from The Academy. Heck, even Michael Mann’s Heat, quite arguably the greatest heist movie ever made, was completely snubbed at the Academy Awards that year, not even earning a single nomination. That said, Widows looks like it can absolutely be one of the rare exceptions to that rule. The talent involved will certainly help garner a decent deal of attention.
With the Disney takeover of Fox looming, it’s hard not to think at least a little bit about the fact that a movie like this would almost certainly never happen at Disney. Granted, this very well would have been given the green light elsewhere, but this is an example of the kind of projects that may suffer as a result of the impending merger. We’ll be hearing word on if this movie is going to live up to what is being promised by this latest trailer, as Widows is set to premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Fox is set to release Widows in theaters on November 16. Be sure to check out the new trailer, courtesy of the 20th Century Fox YouTube channel, for yourself below.
New Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Trailer Goes on a Monster Rampage
The latest trailer for Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween is even more epic than the first trailer that was released last month. Jack Black is still nowhere to be found, but it has been reported that he will show up in the sequel to reprise his role as R.L. Stine at some point in the film. Black was a major selling point for the original movie and the main factor as to why it was such a hit. Regardless, even without Black, Goosebumps 2 looks like a worthy sequel and could even be better than the first installment.
The new international trailer for Goosebumps 2 features even more monsters as Slappy the Dummy attempts to ensure that Halloween lasts forever. Fans who were disappointed with the lack of ghouls and ghosts in the first trailer will be a lot happier this time around, especially when the Headless Horseman shows up on the scene. The new trailer actually makes the sequel look scary, which is pretty awesome. Obviously, there’s elements of humor sprinkled in, but it looks even scarier than the first installment. Even the Gummy Bears appear to be more diabolical this time.
Two boys, Sonny and Sam, stumble upon a new R.L. Stine book entitled Haunted Halloween, which sets Slappy free to unleash a new army of monsters on the town of Wardenclyffe. It’s up to the kids to take down Slappy before every day is turned into Halloween. Ken Jeong plays the kooky neighbor and is featured more in the new trailer along with Sonny’s older sister Sarah. Jeong’s character appears to be a big fan of Halloween, setting up his house with over-the-top decorations and props that will later come to life. Part of those aforementioned decorations are hundreds of purple and black balloons, which are later transformed into a giant spider that causes some pretty serious damage.
The first Goosebumps movie came out in 2015 and earned over $150 million worldwide from an initial budget of $58 million. The film nearly doubled the studio’s conservative box office predictions for the opening weekend, taking in $23.5 million. Goosebumps received mixed reviews from critics, but many agree that the movie is perfect for its target demographic of children. However, Goosebumps 2 looks like it could appeal to older demographics as well, with creepier elements than the first offering.
Slappy the Dummy is voiced by Avery Lee Jones in Goosebumps 2. He was previously voiced by Jack Black, which has led to further questions about Black’s involvement in the sequel. It’s entirely possible that the studio is keeping Black’s appearance under wraps for the time being. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. Goosebumps 2 will hit theaters on October 12th, which is just in time for Halloween.
