Special Prosecutor Mueller Just Made Trump Hand Over Campaign Documents For Russia Probe
While the salacious story lines of the Donald Trump presidency dart unpredictably from threats of global annihilation to petty narcissism multiple times per day, the one constant is Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation, chugging continuously forward as it seeks the truth behind the Trump campaign’s dealings with Russian officials.
Today, the Daily Beast’s Judy Woodruff reported that the Trump campaign has begun handing over documents to Mueller’s investigators.
John Dowd, one of the attorneys representing the president for law firm Jones Day, says the campaign has already begun handing over documents and intends to produce more in “total cooperation” with the investigation.
Many of the documents turned over to Mueller were previously given to Congressional investigators as well, which Woodruff writes is an indication “that the two investigations are covering similar ground, albeit from unique investigative vantage points.”
Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti also noted that the ongoing document transfer is a sign that the investigation is still just ramping up.
“It’s going to take time to produce documents,” said Mariotti. “The documents have to be reviewed. Then those documents may prompt further interviews, and they themselves may prompt Mueller to request additional documents from other entities.”
And with an investigation into a figure whose history is as shady as Donald Trump’s there is no telling where the trail could lead. The Special Prosecutor has the authority to investigate not only “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump,” but “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation” — including any financial misdeeds from the Trump Organization.
So buckle up. This could be a long and very interesting ride.
